A Prayer for Dogs

dog prayer

Dear God,

Please let dog heaven be a place

where pure puppy spirit fills old dogs with glee and energy

dog prayer

and strength for old bones and muscles to run and leap,

dog prayer

and blaze trails through forests and up streams,

and dance once again.  Please, God, let dog heaven be a place where old dogs can dance.

Please let dog heaven be a place

where furry paws and wet noses

dog prayer

and curious eyes

dog prayer

have places to explore,

dog prayer

~~ where there are plenty of daily chores ~~

bird feeders to fill, guests to greet, critters to monitor, socks to hide, tissues to eat, snow to shovel

Please let dog heaven be a place where angels kiss soft brown snouts,

dog prayer

and rub velvet ears,

dog prayer

and scratch full bellies as furry heads slowly drift to peaceful sleep on comfy beds.

Dear God, please let dog heaven be a place

where seasons change from crisp snowy days with snow deep enough for tunnels of fun,

dog prayer

to brilliant fall days where sun shines on sleek coats,

and pink springtime blossoms cushion shady rest spots.

God, there must be water.  Water, ocean, lake, river, any water.

Please let dog heaven be a place

with water for splashing and swimming and slobbering and shaking.

please let dog heaven be a place

You took us to places we never dreamed of, and taught us about loyalty, patience, devotion, and joy.
