Stars and Stripes Forever

“A flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze,
or a beautiful banner of finest silk.

Its intrinsic value may be trifling or great,
but its real value is beyond price,

for it is a precious symbol
of all that we and our comrades have
worked for
and lived for,
and died for,

a free Nation of free men,

true to the faith of the past,

and devoted to the ideals and practice of
Justice, Freedom, and Democracy.”

Flag Day in the USA

Display our flag boldly

and properly:

always above other flags
(yes, even your own beloved state comes second!)

and if it’s not on a pole, hang it vertically
with the blue field in the upper left corner.

and his Eagle Scout flag which flew above the US Capitol~~

NEVER EVER
is the flag to be used as a tablecloth.

~~Show your true colors respectfully~~

and if the band plays Stars and Stripes Forever or any other patriotic music please, please, please, hand me a box of tissues.

The opening quote is from the ceremony for the retirement of the flag (two tissue boxes needed there). The entire ceremony can be found here.

Proper display and other rules regarding the flag were codified in Title 36 of the US Code, Chapter 10, sections 173-178 by the 77th Congress in 1942.

Happy Flag Day

God Bless America

pass the tissues please

  1. Linda~ What a wonderful, inspiring and Patriotic Post! I love to see the flag flying in the breeze and especially proudly unfurling behind boats on the water…

Pass the tissues my way too please 🙂

  2. Nothing any prettier than our flag.
Do you know that TEXAS is the only state allowed to fly our flag at the same height as the U.S. Flag? Yes siree bob….it’s a fact.
Happy Flag Day on the 14th

  3. This is a wonderful post Linda! Thank you for reminding us all to respect our flag. You will see ours flying proudly from our porch this Flag Day and everyday. I can’t get through any patriot song without tears.

    Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  4. Thank YOU! It drives me crazy to see the casual use of our flag. Left out all night (in the dark) or flying tattered. Being used as a curtain… I totally forgot the 14th was Flag day. I have a reminder set in my phone now. Great information! 🙂

  5. Thank you for posting this great tribute to the symbol of our country.
I has been galling to see how casual people have become, concerning our flag. Men who won’t remove their hats during the National Anthem, as you say, using the flag as fashion statements, even a president who refused to put his hand over his heart, or wear a flag pin.
If we can’t show respect for this symbol, how can we respect our constitution, our country, and its laws. No wonder we see hoards of people destroy private property, stealing and looting, etc. What a shame.
I will be displaying my flag on the 14th as usual, and I hope that will encourage others to do the same.

  6. Beautiful post with so many great truths and wonderful pictures!! Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful day!!

  7. Love! Isn’t it great that we bring out our flags for Memorial Day, Flag Day and then 4th of July, all so close together!! It’s a patriotic summer for me.

  8. Hi Linda: First I want to thank you for visiting the Cottage and leaving such kind comments for me. I am your newest follower and I love what I see so far. You and I seem to have something in common, as I have drafted out a Flag Day post(before I saw yours)(by the way, your’s is wonderful, such pretty photos) so when it comes up don’t think I’m a copycat right off the bat, and in your previous post about the type of decorating you like, even though I live in a Victorian, I’m all over the place as far as my style is concerned. I remember those first Country Living magazines so well, and do you remember “Early American Life”? I’ve still got some leftovers from that one. Anyway I look forward to seeing all of your previous posts..Happy Sunday..Judy

  9. I love the US flag…great pics. I always when I cross the border collect anything with the US flag on it, I love collectng them. Thanks for posting this great post.

  10. What a beautiful patriotic post for Flag Day Linda. Beautiful photos, love the one of your two guys! Great info and I love how you celebrate using the Red, White and Blue. We have the greatest nation and I’m so proud to call America home! I’ve got to get my flag out as soon as this rain stops.
    Have a good week Linda.

  11. Love your display and great reminder abput the rules.
I have a question. I have fabric that looks like a flag but it doesn’t have the 13 stripes. Is that appropriate to use as a tablecloth?

  12. Happy Flag Day, Linda! This was a wonderful tribute to the Stars and Stripes –may she forever wave over the land of the free, and home of the brave!

Thank you for your birthday wishes amd compliments on my daughter’s wedding!
I had my BD cake slice in a restaurant on my birthday–unfortunately no photos. My daughter and son-in-law live in Colorado, as does my son and daughter-in-law and two grandsons. I try to visit as often as possible …I love it there. It’s hard being two thousand miles away but that is our reality right now. Thank goodness for SKYPE –it is a nice way to chat with everyone there.

  13. My sister’s bDay is June 14…nice patriotic post honoring our flag and what it symbolizes! God Bless America….teehee….like your son’s Marvel poster. Bet he enjoyed The Avengers! 🙂

  14. It must be that I am getting older, but this July 4th moved me like never before…..no tissues though…..still, I feel so grateful to live in this amazing and free country….we all grumble but are the luckiest folks on the earth
