Beginnings

Our family has visited Colonial Williamsburg many times, and after each visit I leave ready to empty my house of all decor and completely refurnish it with reproductions of colonial era goods and folk art.

I love the Georgian architecture

the cute passageways

the streets

shops

(even dishes!)

and especially the gardens!

The Folk Art Museum is filled with treasures–too many to see in one day.

But even with all the buildings, collections and activities, I am most impressed by the history.

This is the Capitol, where Patrick Henry made his famous speech calling for the colonists to defy the British and their Stamp Act, and where the Virginia General Assembly, in May 1776, voted to instruct their delegates at the Constitutional Congress in Philadelphia to vote for Independence!

Meanwhile, down the street at the Governor’s Palace,

the governor’s family had already fled, followed shortly by the governor, who was known forever after as the one who lost Britain’s greatest colony.

Poor guy!  Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

I could spend several weeks in Colonial Williamsburg every year
and never get tired of it!

During our latest visit we stayed at the beautifully decorated Williamsburg Lodge.  The lobby was filled with temptations, including these goodies.

And these.

How about this?

I will spare your tender ears from Mr. Fun‘s thoughts on my suggestion that this cabinet would look stunning in our dining room.

You know, our house is a Georgian colonial, after all, so I think these pieces would be quite appropriate.

I am telling you for sure that somehow this mirror is going to be making the trip from Virginia to Connecticut.

I hope you have enjoyed this little trip to Colonial Williamsburg, and that you will join me in remembering the brave men who so boldly defied the King and gave birth to our independence!

There are more fascinating (I hope!) trips for you in the next few weeks so stay tuned!

And of course you don’t want to miss the celebration of the beginning, one year ago, of my blog!
I think I will have a giveaway!

  3. I’m so happy to see you back! You’ve been gone for quite awhile, but it’s good to know that you’ve been in a wonderful place. I haven’t been to Williamsburg in years, but I do have such fine memories.

  4. Thanks for visiting my blog. I have never been northeast, so I really enjoy “trips” and will be back for more.

  5. What a lovely trip! I’m just like you, whenever I visit a place I love, I want to come home and transform my house! Thanks for following Frugalicious Me! Right back at you girl! And trust me, you don’t want to see what Milly does next! She is a bad dog and always getting into trouble-mostly food related-hehehe-but so darn funny, we can’t ever get mad at her.
    XOXO,

  6. Hi Linda,
Like you I am a big fan of CW and have visited from Europe 3 times.
We stay at the Marriott Manor Club @ Fords Colony which isn’t too far away.
I really enjoyed my nostalgic trip around CW with you and now you’ve got me yearning to go back for a 4th visit!
Thanks for noticing my pink hydrangeas, do please post some pix of your blue ones. I can’t grow that colour beacuse my soil is not acidic enough!
    Have a great week

  7. I have never been to Colonial Williamsburg and it’s definitely on my bucket list. Alas, that bucket list just keeps getting longer and longer . . .

Mr. Fun sounds like my husband when we travel. His “strong” objections kept me from buying an enormous baroque chandelier I found in Rome that would have been too big for our house . . . heck, it might have been too big for the White House . . . but it was so beautiful . . . (sigh)

  8. Linda: I just read your comment on my previous post. I just wanted to say that if you are ever in the Chicago area, you must let me know! We’ll have our very own party!

  9. That was a lovely tour, Linda! I used to live on Governor’s Island in NYC and it looked a lot like that, brings back wonderful memories. Thank you for visiting my blog.

  10. O, gosh, what a super tour. I enjoyed every single photo and word.
    Thanks for taking us along.
Looking forward to your other trips. We can’t afford the gas to “go” so I will travel along with you, my friend. :))

  11. I love Williamsburg! I have several books on it and have stared at it on the web and in magazines. But, I have never been there. Thanks for taking us there, beautiful tour.

  12. I have never visited Colonial Williamsburg, but I always hear how wonderful it is. It’s not that far from here so I should make a point of visiting.

    Have a great week!

  13. I have many family vacation photos from Williamsburg–it, in combination with Washington DC, were one of our favorite trips when our children were young. We had the Colonial Pass and toured all the buildings and loved seeing everyone in costume going about their lives as if it were the 1700’s. Your photos are lovely!

  14. I have never been there. I would like to go at Christmas and see all the holiday decor.

I have been to the one in Mass, and of course the restoration village we have here on LI, like 35 times on field trips with my class!

  15. Beautiful pictures and it all looks so familiar. Glad you could visit Williamsburg and find it as interesting as we do. We visited at least once every year for about 20 years before we moved four years ago.

    Darryl and Ruth 🙂

  16. Oh Yes! I LOVE Williamsburg. Your pictures are SO BEAUTIFUL and I’m so happy you had a great time! I see a few pieces of furniture I would LOVE to have! I’m sure you loved them all too…
    Happy 4th to you,
    Hugs,
    Donna
